There are a lot of misconceptions around what it takes to start and run a successful small business. Many people are misled into focusing on passion and novelty. In my experience, Discipline and Mission-Focus get you where you want to be. Even when you love what you do, some days will feel like a grind and there will always be mundane tasks to complete that are simply the by-product of doing business. The Marine Corps instilled in me the discipline to get out of my rack in the morning, assess what needs done and begin the work, regardless of how I feel about it at that moment. Don't get bogged down in incessant planning and strategizing. Focus on how you can generate cash-flow right now and grow from there. Develop a "good enough" plan, violently execute it, and adjust on the fly. Ignore distractions. Learn to say "No" to things that don't support your mission. Otherwise, you will be inundated with additional tasks and commitments that don't move your needle. No one is coming to do the work for you. Encourage self-rescue.
